Inquest opens into death of former Bolton mayoress killed in crash

An inquest has opened into the death of a former mayoress killed in a crash.

Gay Wharton, 58, suffered 'multiple injuries' after being hit by a car in Chorley New Road, Bolton, on November 13.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Timothy Brennand, senior coroner for Manchester West, heard that Mrs Wharton, of Kendal Road, Bolton, was crossing the road when she was hit.

Police coroner's officer Benjamin Dobbs said: "On November 13, Mrs Wharton was crossing Chorley New Road at a pedestrian crossing showing green.

"The ATS was showing red. Traffic had stopped, accordingly, in both directions.

"A vehicle overtook the stationary traffic and travelled down the centre of the road.

"The vehicle hit Mrs Wharton on the crossing, causing fatal head injuries.

"The offending vehicle failed to stop at the scene."

A post-mortem examination gave Mrs Wharton's provisional cause of death as 'multiple injuries'.

Bolton Coroner's Court heard that Mrs Wharton worked as a legal receptionist and was married to Stephen Wharton.

A police investigation into her death is ongoing.

Assad Hussain, 23, of Maplewood Gardens, Bolton, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with her death.

He appeared at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court on Monday (November 16) and has been remanded to next appear at Bolton Crown Court on December 14.

Wasim Iqbal, of Chorley New Road, Bolton, has also been charged with the same offence and appeared at Wigan Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (November 19).

He has been remanded to next appear at Manchester Crown Court on December 17.

Mr Brennand adjourned the inquest until January 8 when a review will take place.
