Inquest opens into death of beloved granddad after school wall collapse

An inquest has opened into the death of a Knowle granddad who was fatally injured when a school wall fell on him.

Gary Anstey, of Ilminster Avenue, was helping build a new classroom at Swainswick School near Bath when it collapsed on March 19.

The civil engineer, 57, was airlifted to Southmead Hospital but died from his injuries the following day.

Tributes were paid last week to Mr Anstey, whose family said they “thought the world” of him.

Assistant coroner, Dr Peter Harrowing, opened an inquest into his death today at Avon Coroner’s Court.

Coroner’s officer Alex Norton said: “The deceased was admitted to hospital after a wall collapsed, injuring him while at his place of work.

“His death was confirmed at 5.35pm on March 20.

"A post-mortem analysis has been carried out and we are waiting for the analysis of tissue samples, which is expected to take around three weeks.”

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is investigating the incident alongside the Health and Safety Executive.

Asked by Dr Harrowing how long this probe is likely to take, Ms Norton replied: “It is normally quite a long process.”

The assistant coroner said Mr Anstey’s employer, H Mealing and Sons, is an “interested party” in the inquest.

He added: “For the moment I won’t make the school an interested party, pending the investigation by the police.

“I am not able to proceed with the inquest until the police investigation is concluded.

“If there are any criminal proceedings afterwards, that is entirely a matter for them.”

Dr Harrowing did not fix a date for the inquest, but said it would take place before a jury in around six months.

H Mealing and Sons has been approached for comment.

Swainswick School has said it is unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation, but said it is "shocked and saddened by this tragic event".

Mr Anstey was survived by his wife Anne, sons Shaun and Scott, five-month-old granddaughter Scarlet, and step-grandchildren Garylee, 12, and eight-year-old Emily.
