Inquest opens into 19-year-old Przemyslaw Kozlowski who died in the River Trent

A visitor to Nottingham was certified dead on the Victoria Embankment after his body was found in the River Trent.

Details were given as a city coroner opened an inquest into the death of 19-year-old Przemyslaw Kozlowski.

He lived in Bradford but was visiting Nottingham, where he was seen swimming in the river on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, shortly after 1pm.

Assistant Coroner James Hargan opened an adjourned the hearing into the death of Mr Kozlowski today, Tuesday. The cause of death was not given.

He said that Mr Kozlowski was found to be dead on the Victoria Embankment in The Meadows beside the River Trent.

No witnesses were called to the brief hearing at the Council House. None of his relatives attended.

After the alarm was raised, hundreds of people saw the rescue efforts which involved specialist police divers, fire crews and ambulance staff.

Mr Kozlowski was described on a GoFundMe page as "the breadwinner" of his family. The internet appeal was launched so his body could be flown home to Poland for burial.

He was said to have only arrived in the UK "just a few months ago", according to the fundraising page. It was set up by Izabela Olender who referred to his first name simply as "Przemek."

She wrote: "Despite his young age he was very mature, hard working and the breadwinner for his family.

"Those that knew him will remember his wide smile, big heart, positive outlook on life and caring nature. He was someone you could count on. Always there for everyone."

The coroner said that he had decided to adjourn the inquest so that "further enquiries can be made."

No date has been fixed for the completion of the hearing.
