Inquest opens after 'devoted' Manchester dad's body found dumped on moors

An inquest has opened into the death of a dad from Moss Side whose body was found dumped on the Yorkshire Moors.

Rhys Thompson, 29, was found dead at around 6.40am on Thursday, May 13, on land off Pike End Road in Rishworth, Calderdale.

Detectives are treating his death as murder which may be linked to a drugs dispute with an Albanian gang, the M.E.N understands.

Officers believe Rhys had been involved in a disturbance in Crumpsall just hours before his body was found.

So far, five men have been arrested though no-one has been charged.

Today, an inquest into Rhys' death was opened in Bradford by assistant coroner Crispin Oliver, YorkshireLive reports.

The inquest was told that Rhys was a single man who worked as a courier driver.

His body had been found on a private track by a dog walker, the hearing was told.

Police and paramedics attended the scene and it was confirmed that Rhys had died.

Last month a post-mortem established that he died of serious head injuries caused by a weapon, and that this is likely to have occurred in the Greater Manchester area.

The M.E.N understands the main line of inquiry is that the disturbance was a failed attempt to 'tax' a cannabis farm controlled by an Albanian gang.

It is believed Rhys was caught while attempting to flee in a white van that was parked on Delaunays Road.

Paying tribute to him, his family said: "Our beloved son, Rhys Thompson, was our everything.

"A sweet, funny, warm-hearted man, a fantastic brother, devoted father, loving boyfriend and respectful loyal friend.

"Rhys had the biggest heart and loved his family and friends dearly. He would always help when he could, he was a beautiful soul. We all miss him terribly; he did not deserve to be taken so soon.

"We are heartbroken; his loss will change our lives forever. We cannot imagine a future without him."
