Inquest opens into death of 10-year-old girl who died in ambulance tragedy

A coroner has spoken of "the tragic passing" of a 10-year-old who died after a collision with an ambulance.

The comment was made as he opened an inquest into the death of Shaniqua Loftman-Smith, who died in the Queen's Medical Centre on December 30.

She was injured in an incident in Low Wood Road, Bulwell, eight days earlier.

No details were given as Assistant Nottinghamshire Coroner Gordon Clow opened the hearing at the Council House. No witnesses were called.

Mr Clow said: "A postmortem was undertaken. We await the result of that postmortem."

He adjourned the hearing but did not set a date for the completion of the inquest.

The coroner said that Shaniqua was born on May 28, 2009, and was 10 when she died in the QMC. She was formally identified by her mother at the hospital.

The coroner ended the brief hearing by saying: "It only remains for me to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends for her tragic passing at such a young age."

Shortly after her death, Shaniqua's aunt Charmaine Smith launched a £5,000 appeal to pay for her funeral, saying she wanted to give her "the best send-off she deserves". The target was reached within three days with contributions from more then 300 people.

In a tribute, Charmaine said: "My heart bleeds over and over for my sister and family.

"Ten years old is way too young."

Floral tributes were left near the scene of the incident.

After the death, East Midlands Ambulance Service's chief executive Richard Henderson said: "I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the patient's family at this very difficult time, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident."

At the time, Notts police launched an appeal for help with their investigation, including a request for any footage from dashboard cameras of other vehicles.
