Inquest into Kanturk family shooting to begin next month

An inquest into the incident where a father and two sons died in a suspected murder suicide are to begin next month.

Tadgh O'Sullivan and his two sons Mark and Diarmuid died in a tragedy which shocked the rural town of Kanturk in North Cork last October.

The inquest will open in Mallow next month, following the death of Ann O'Sullivan, the sole survivor of the incident, after a lengthy battle with illness.

Ann was interviewed by gardai before she died and correspondence was found by gardai which enabled them to establish what is believed to have been the sequence of events that lead to these deaths.

Gardai believe that there was a murder-suicide pact which led to the deaths, just days before Diarmuid was due to graduate with a law degree from UCC.

Gardai found Mark shot dead in his bedroom; father Tadhg and youngest son Diarmuid were discovered dead with gunshot wounds in nearby lands on October 26.

It is suspected that the deaths followed an ongoing family disagreement about a large piece of land owned by the family.

Ann, their wife and mother, fled the family home and raised the alarm from a neighbour's house, leading gardai to what was, by the time they arrived, a suspected suicide murder scene.
