Inquest hears HMP Lowdham Grange prisoner died from Covid

The inquest into the death of a prisoner at HMP Lowdham Grange has been opened.

Ashley Osbert Williams was 56-years-old when he died on October 17 of this year, having been admitted to Nottingham City Hospital with Covid-19.

Assistant coroner Laurinda Bower spoke only to confirm his age, date of death and the results of a post-mortem examination.

The hearing opened virtually from Nottingham Council House just after 3pm on Tuesday, November 24.

"I understand that Ashley Osbert Williams was 56-years-old at the time of his death having been born on May 17, 1964 in Grenada in the Caribbean," assistant coroner Bower said.

"He died at the City Hospital on October 17, 2020, and the cause of death has been proposed as multi-organ failure as a result of Covid-19 pneumonia, with a background of ischemic heart disease.

"He was a prisoner at HMP Lowdham Grange and in these circumstances, it will be necessary to hold an inquest.

"I offer my sincere condolences to all who knew him."

The inquest was adjourned until a later date "so that further information can be gathered", assistant coroner Bower added.
