Innovative pupil helps bag £500 for new playground bid at school

An Elderslie pupil who was disappointed his school narrowly missed out on the chance of winning a new playground has come up trumps.

As revealed in the Express, Elderslie’s Wallace Primary School lost a public vote organised by Colgate to win a new space made out of recycled oral hygiene items.

Not to be outdone, however, Jay Stewart, six, took the initiative and approached local businesses, asking them to help make their dream come true after all.

Housebuilder Barratt Homes, who are currently building in Elderslie, were thrilled to be able to help the school with new play equipment with a £500 donation.

Susan Dalrymple, headteacher of Wallace Primary School, said: “We are so proud of Jay showing initiative and approaching Barratt Homes.

“Our children were so disappointed to miss out on the prize from the competition so this is great news to be able to add new equipment to our playground, which Jay can help us to pick.”

Wallace Primary School parent council were competing for votes to win the national competition hosted by Colgate and Terracycle.

The winning school would win new playground equipment manufactured from recycled toothbrushes, dental floss containers and toothpaste
tubes.

Unfortunately, the school was unsuccessful – but that didn’t deter the team, who were determined to secure a new playground.

Estelle Sykes, sales director for Barratt West Scotland, said: “When we build in communities, we try and immerse ourselves in that community as much as possible.

“Whether that’s helping the school as we have done in this occasion, offering our employees time to help out with local causes or charities, or providing useful amenities and upgrades to the area – we try and respond to the needs of the local
people.”

Earlier this month a cheque for £2,000 was handed over to delighted primary youngsters at the school to pay for new playground equipment by Rays of Hope.
