Several groundbreaking developments in theatrical exhibition were recognized at this year's Academy of Motion Picture Awards and Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards. Among the 16 achievements honored were advancements in sound technology and digital laser projectors.
The ceremony, hosted by Natasha Lyonne, took place at the David Geffen Theater of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, followed by a celebration at Fanny's restaurant within the museum.
Notable recipients of the Scientific and Engineering Awards included Dolby for its Dolby Atmos immersive cinema sound system, which has revolutionized the audio experience in theaters worldwide since its launch in 2012.
In addition, developers of three laser projectors were acknowledged for their contributions to enhancing brightness and contrast in digital cinema projection. The Christie E3LH Dolby Vision HDR cinema projection system, the IMAX Prismless laser projector, and the Barco RGB laser projector were all recognized for their innovative technology.
Technical Achievement Awards were presented to individuals who played key roles in the advancement of laser projection technology. Bill Beck, Gregory T. Niven, and a team of developers were acknowledged for their work on semiconductor lasers and laser diodes.
Furthermore, developers involved in open-source software projects were commended for their contributions. Notable recipients included those who worked on the OpenVDB VFX software and Pixar's Universal Scene Description open-source framework.
Other recipients of the Scientific and Engineering Awards included Jaden Oh for the Marvelous Designer digital clothing creation system. Technical Achievement Awards were also given to individuals who contributed to production capabilities and safety, such as the creators of the Blind Driver Roof Pod and Movie Works cable cutter devices.
