Inmates at Britain's toughest prison 'heartbroken' after old-age walking group axed

Inmates at one of Britain’s toughest jails are heartbroken after their old-age walking group was given the boot.

The weekly rambles around the 53-acre grounds were a big hit with the over-60s.

But a report revealed they were axed because governors could not spare any guards to keep watch over the walkers.

Killer John Cannan, 69 – the only suspect in the 1986 disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh – is among the ageing cons at HMP Full Sutton, near York.

A source said: “Some of the guys would be the last you’d expect to enjoy a country stroll but there has been a rumpus over the walks being cancelled.”

Inmates are allowed two and a half hours of their cells and many say they don’t get enough exercise.

An official report said: “The over-60s walking group was regularly cancelled due to staff being detailed to cover other duties.”

The Prison Service was approached for comment.
