Inmate dies in custody at Barlinnie jail as investigation set to be launched

An investigation is set to be launched after an inmate died at Barlinnie Prison.

Barry Watson passed away while “ under custody ” at the jail in the east end of Glasgow.

The 42-year-old died on the 28th December last year and it was first reported by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) on 7th January.

It is understood Watson was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court in 2019.

The SPS confirmed a Fatal Accident Inquiry into the death will be held "in due course" but that there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this stage.

A spokesman said: "Barry Watson, 42, a prisoner from HMP Barlinnie has died.

"He was convicted at Glasgow Sheriff Court in 2019.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
