Injury update following Chiefs vs. Lions, Week 4

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered some late-game injuries in the fourth quarter of play against the Detroit Lions.

Alex Okafor was ruled out of the game in the fourth quarter with a hip injury. If you’ll recall, Okafor dealt with a hip pointer injury during preseason which limited him. He could be dealing with that same injury again, but it was referred to as a hip strain after the game.

It’s unfortunate as Okafor recorded his first sack as a member of the Chiefs today. He also had a few key pressures during the game. It seemed like he was finally hitting his stride and now he’ll take a back seat due to injury.

Linebacker Damien Wilson apparently left the game late with a concussion. They actually had to call down from the booth and stop the play and take Wilson off the field. He was going to try and play through it, but he was quickly ruled out. He was spotted on the sideline with his helmet, though, which drew some uncertainty. It appeared to be a good display of the NFL’s concussion policy working as intended, but after the game, Andy Reid clarified that there was a mistake and Wilson could have returned to the game. That would suggest that he’s not concussed.

There was some question about whether LeSean McCoy re-injured his ankle because of Darrel Williams being in for the last offensive drive. Andy Reid did not mention any injuries to McCoy, but it’s certainly a possibility.

Okafor was replaced by Emmanuel Ogbah and Wilson was replaced by Ben Niemann. Overall neither defensive injury hurt the Chiefs too badly, but keep an eye out next week. The Chiefs don’t have a lot of depth at the defensive end position and Wilson could be in the NFL’s concussion protocol this week. We’ll just have to see what happens with Wilson’s issue there.
