Injury scare for Tottenham as star leaves field injured at Africa Cup of Nations

Tottenham defender Serge Aurier fears his Africa Cup of Nations may be over after being forced to leave the field during Ivory Coast's 1-0 defeat to Morocco in Cairo on Friday.

The Ivory Coast captain is coming off an injury-filled season at Tottenham during which he was sidelined at various stages of the season by a thigh problem, groin injury and hamstring tear.

"I think it may be over because I felt something. It may be a tear," the right-back said without giving more details about the injury.

Ivory Coast were outplayed by Morocco in their second Group D clash and Aurier said their opponents looked much fresher.

"I think we came across a team that had more juice than us. They had one more day of recovery after the first round and I think we, quite simply, ran out of freshness." he added.

"The Moroccans were better committed and created more goal opportunities. Our goal tonight was to qualify for the round of 16 but we still have one game left for that. We will do everything to win it,'' he said of Monday's game against minnows Namibia.

"We lost a battle but not the war, there is still a match to play. We are competitors and we know why we are here and that is to qualify."

Meanwhile, Bongani Zungu's second-half header earned South Africa a 1-0 win over battling Namibia to boost their hopes of reaching the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage.

Zungu converted from Percy Tau's corner in the 68th minute as South Africa bounced back from their opening defeat to Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana boss Stuart Baxter had warned his side ahead of the match not to underestimate Namibia and they did indeed prove tough opposition, goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua proving equal to Themba Zwane's effort in the first half.

But Baxter's men finally made the breakthrough from a set-piece and closed out victory.

Victory moved South Africa level on three points with Ivory Coast in Group D ahead of their third match against already-qualified Morocco.

Namibia, despite two defeats from two, are not yet out of it, but need to beat Ivory Coast and hope South Africa lose to Morocco to stand any chance of progressing.
