Injury concerns for Ireland as Matt Doherty and John Egan forced off in Premier League action

Mick McCarthy and Ireland will be biting their nails this week after key defenders Matt Doherty and John Egan were forced off in Premier League action this evening.

Ireland are just over two weeks out from their crunch Euro 2020 clash with Denmark at the Aviva Stadium, knowing that nothing but a win will see them reach next summer's showpiece.

And with concerns already around netminder Darren Randolph, regular centre half Richard Keogh ruled out and captain Seamus Coleman suspended - Mick McCarthy's worst nightmare might well have come true.

Wing-back Doherty, who was in line to start ahead of Coleman, suffered the injury about an hour into Wolves' game at Arsenal today and tried to play on before eventually being substituted on 71 minutes.

Doherty suffered the injury in a challenge in Arsenal's attacking third.

After breaking forward, the wing-back landed heavily on his right knee and was clearly in some discomfort before eventually signalling to be substituted around ten minutes later.

Doherty was also nursing a knee injury earlier this season.

Egan was also in line to start after featuring against Switzerland and Georgi, but suffered a knock late on in Sheffield United's 3-0 win over Burnley and was substituted.

Both clubs are yet to release any information on the injury concerns.

Elsewhere, Aaron Connolly impressed for Brighton and Hove Albion while centre half Shane Duffy got on the scoresheet with a late strike in their 2-0 win over Norwich.

Other Ireland stars in action in the Premier League included Conor Hourihane, Enda Stevens, David McGoldrick and Jeff Hendrick - while Robbie Brady also played 30 minutes off the bench for Burnley.
