Injured walker on Criffel leads to Moffat Mountain Rescue Team call out

Emergency services were called into action on Wednesday afternoon after a visiting 52-year-old man injured an ankle walking part of Criffel Hill near Dumfries.

A dozen volunteer members of the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team responded to a police call-out at 1.30pm.

Their doctor administered pain relief to the injured walker while they got a stretcher up Knockendoch, which is part of Criffel, to take him down to a waiting ambulance for treatment at Dumfries Infirmary.

Team member James Coles said: “We transferred the casualty to a stretcher and carried him off the hill – using a back rope to protect the stretcher on steep ground – to the team’s Volkswagen ambulance.

“He was then transferred to the waiting Scottish Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

“The team then cleaned down all the equipment used on the callout to eliminate any Covid-19 risk prior to standing
down.”

The team was also called into action after a man was reported to be stranded on an island at Loch Skeen at the top of the Grey Mare’s Tail near Moffat just before 7pm on Friday.

He was eventually airlifted to safety by a Maritime and Coatsguard Agency helicopter from Prestwick.

A statement from MMRT said: “The team worked as part of a multi-agency response to a person stuck on a small island on Loch Skeen in the Moffat hills.

“The team deployed members onto the hill alongside a water rescue team from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“Rescue 199, a Maritime and Coatsguard Agency helicopter from Prestwick, was fortunately able to winch the casualty from the island as the team and fire rescue arrived.”

The man was airlifted to Borders General Hospital for treatment.

Wednesday’s Criffel rescue was the second on the hill this month.

Police called in the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team to retrieve an injured woman from the peak after she suffered a suspected broken ankle fracture.

She was winched to safety by the rescue helicopter from Prestwick.
