Injured teen rescued by helicopter and flown to hospital after ‘tombstoning’ from cliffs

A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after he was injured jumping from cliffs in a picturesque corner of west Wales.

According to HM Coastguard, the teenager jumped from cliffs near Aberporth in Ceredigion shortly before 6pm on Wednesday evening.

They believe he was ‘tombstoning’ - jumping in a straight, upright vertical posture into the sea from the rocks above.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene, along with coastguard teams from Cardigan and New Quay, while Cardigan RNLI also sent two lifeboats to the area to help with the rescue.

The man was placed on a stretcher on the cliffs and escorted to safety by a member of the coastguard team using a winch, which was lowered from the helicopter.

An emergency ambulance also attended the area but was stood down, the injured teen instead being airlifted to Morriston Hospital in Swansea by the coastguard.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “Just after 6pm last night, we received a report of a young male who’d been injured while at Aberporth.

“It also looks like he might have been tombstoning. The HM Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon was sent, along with Cardigan and New Quay Coastguard Rescue Teams, Cardigan RNLI lifeboat and the Aberporth RNLI Lifeguards."

The extent of the teenager’s injuries is not known.
