Injured Scottish hill walker in dramatic three-hour rescue as Storm Arwen closed in

An injured walker was saved by a Mountain Rescue Team in a dramatic mission as the storm closed in.

A walker was rescued by Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue from Middleton as they scrambled in the valley injuring themselves in the process.

In a disoriented state the individual didn’t know where they were but eventually veered off the path to an embankment to get phone reception to give a description of their location.

It took the brave teams around three hours of searching to find the individual in the stormy and extreme conditions.

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue said: “Due to the severe weather forecast we placed our team on 'standby' at 1630 today - we wanted to have team members at a heightened state of readiness as we knew anyone who was lost, missing or injured was facing a much higher risk due to the extreme weather.

“At 17:36 we received a call from Police Scotland to help look for a walker with an ankle injury near North Middleton, Midlothian. The walker had injured themselves, become disorientated but had no phone reception - they made considerable effort to leave the path they were on to climb an embankment to get phone reception.

“Although they couldn't give an exact location they were able to describe what was around them which helped narrow the search.

Once they had phoned for help they did the right thing and took shelter from the wind behind a wall and stayed where they were.

“MRT started carrying out 'corridor searches' along paths and tracks and at 19:55, just close to 2hr 25 mins after MRT were first contacted the casualty was located.

“This search was carried out in some of the most extreme 'non-winter' conditions the team has faced for a considerable time and although a challenging search it was an extremely successful outcome in a relatively short period of time

We hope everyone stays safe for the remainder of #StormArwen and our casualty makes a speedy recovery.”
