A Hunter teenager was flown to John Hunter Hospital after sustaining a suspected spinal injury on the football field at the weekend.
NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to the Stroud Showground where the Raiders women's league tag team faced Clarence Town on Saturday, August 15, in round 14 of the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League competition.
About 3pm, a club source said the player, aged in her late teens, took a shoulder to the side of her neck in a collision with another player, and suffered tingling in her back and fingers.
Paramedics assessed the girl at the scene, off Cowper Street, where a NSW Ambulance spokesman said her condition was stable.
She was flown to John Hunter Hospital for assessment with specialist doctors just after 3.15pm.
The club told the Newcastle Herald on Sunday afternoon the player had escaped more serious injury and was recovering from soft tissue damage.
It was understood she had been discharged from hospital by Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders women went on to a 24-4 trouncing against Clarence Town and were second on the Hunter Rugby League C-grade ladder, with 22 points, trailing Gloucester with 24 points.
The team has posted only two losses for the season, with 10 wins and two draws.
