Injured otter tragically killed in East Lothian after being hit by car

An otter has been found dead in East Lothian following a search after the animal was spotted injured in the area.

As reported by Edinburgh Live, an appeal was made by East Lothian Animal Rescue on Tuesday (25 February) for locals to keep an eye out at Port Seton promenade.

The otter was reported to have sustained a head injury and was last seen towards the end of the promenade heading in the direction the camps.

Despite both The SSPCA and locals coming together to try and rescue the otter, the search ended tragically when it emerged that the animal had been hit by a car.

East Lothian Animal Rescue Advice confirmed that the otter was struck with a car opposite the horse field on the way to Port Seton. The body of the animal was found by local man Jim Roberston.

The Advice Page put out a statement saying: "Following a post mortem examination, we can sadly confirm that the otter with the head wound was the victim of the R.T.A last night.

"Our thanks to all who shared our posts in the hopes of finding him.

"We will be moving forward immediately with wildlife crossing signs at the end Port Seton. Hopefully we can avoid further wildlife road accidents in the future."

Locals have taken to social media to share their sadness following the incident. One woman said: "Poor thing. Hope this kind of incident can be avoided in future."
