Injured man rushed to hospital after crash closes M56 motorway

A man was rushed to hospital after a major crash closed the M56 motorway.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3pm after a crash between junction 11 and junction 12 near Runcorn.

The road was closed in both directions as police, fire crews and paramedics arrived to help those involved in the crash.

An air ambulance was also landed close to the scene but it was not clear whether the man was airlifted to hospital.

Both carriageway remained closed through rush hour before the scene was cleared with the help of Highways England.

Once the road was clear, North West Ambulance Service confirmed that a man had been taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed that the driver had suffered a medical episode at the wheel shortly before the crash.

Cheshire Police said that only one vehicle was involved in the crash and that the car had been recovered.

Both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the motorway were reopened shortly before 6pm.
