Injured man rescued by paramedics and firefighters after getting trapped on Whitley Bay roof

An injured man was rescued by emergency services after becoming trapped on a rooftop in Whitley Bay.

The casualty was brought to safety by paramedics and firefighters on Thursday afternoon, having suffered an injury to his knee.

Fire engines, ambulances and aerial ladder were at work on Percy Road from around 11.45am to 2.30pm.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at quarter to 12 to an address in Whitley Bay to a patient trapped on the roof with a dislocated knee.

"We dispatched four hazardous area response teams - part of their training is designed to be able to work at a height, so they can start treatment even before the fire crews arrive to help move the patient.

"We also had two paramedic ambulances on standby."

After being brought down from the roof, the injured man was taken to The Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington for treatment.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "This afternoon with North East Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team colleagues we rescued an injured man from a rooftop in Whitley Bay.

"He was rescued using the aerial ladder platform and safe working at height kit and then taken to hospital."

Two crews from Tynemouth and an aerial ladder from Marley Park fire station, in Sunderland, were sent to the incident.
