Injured man rescued by lifeboat and taken to hospital after falling from South Shields cliffs

A rescue operation was launched to save a man who suffered head and leg injuries after falling down a cliff in South Shields.

Emergency services were called to the Marsden area at around 3.15pm on Tuesday after reports that a man had fell from the cliff edge.

The air ambulance flew to the scene, and the Sunderland Coastguard, the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and paramedics arrived to help.

The rope rescue technician from the SSVLB was lowered down to the man along with a paramedic so he could be assessed.

Due to the incoming tide it was decided that the best way to rescue the man was by lifeboat.

He was helped into the boat and taken to Manhaven Bay, before being carried out to an ambulance.

The man was then taken to the South Tyneside District Hospital in South Shields for treatment.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 3.12pm to reports of an injured man near the Marsden Inn on the Coast Road in South Shields.

"We dispatched four crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a double-crewed ambulance.

"With support from the Coastguard, we were able to rescue the injured male and transported him to South Tyneside Hospital with leg, pelvis and head injuries."
