Injured man cut out of car and taken to hospital after crash blocked Bowburn road

Firefighters had to cut open a car to rescue an injured man after a crash in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the A177 Durham Road in Bowburn at around 5pm on Tuesday.

The road was blocked between Prince Charles Avenue and Tail Upon End Lane while firefighters worked to free a man trapped inside a black car.

He was then taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham although a Durham Constabulary spokesperson said the collision had resulted in a "minor injury".

Fire crews from Durham and Spennymoor stations were on the scene as well as a specialist rescue unit from Bishop Auckland.

They left at around 6pm and the road was fully reopened.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance were sent to the scene and one man was taken to hospital in Durham.
