Injured Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita leaves Guinea camp to return for assessment

Liverpool's Naby Keita is expected to return to Melwood within the next 24 hours for further assessment on a thigh injury sustained on international duty.

The midfielder has been allowed to travel back to England after Guinea completed their group-stage commitments at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations .

Paul Put’s men are guaranteed a last-16 berth as one of the best third-placed teams, but have a number of days rest before that section of the tournament begins on July 5.

As such, Keita has been released in order to receive treatment with his club’s medical professionals back on Merseyside.

The 24-year-old picked up the issue during Guinea’s 1-0 defeat to Nigeria last week and was forced to miss Sunday’s victory over Burundi as a result.

However, he is yet to be ruled out of the tournament and will hope to be able to feature in his country’s upcoming knockout tie.

Keita had not been expected to appear in Egypt at all this summer after suffering a season-ending adductor injury during the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona.

But the Guinean made a quicker-than-expected recovery to claim a place in Put’s squad that is being jeopardised by further fitness issues.
