NEW DELHI: Andy Murray made the unfortunate decision to withdraw from his first-round match on Tuesday at the ATP/WTA Cincinnati Open due to injury. The injured Scot's spot in the draw has been taken over by Germany's Daniel Altmaier.
Murray's participation had been uncertain since the previous week in Toronto, where he withdrew during the third round, ultimately leading to Jannik Sinner's victory in the tournament. Struggling with an abdominal injury, the three-time Grand Slam champion's condition prompted his withdrawal.
With less than two weeks left until the commencement of the US Open on August 28, Murray faces a race against time to recover and regain fitness.
Daniel Altmaier will now face Australian player Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the tournament, following his replacement of Murray in the draw.
