There are some things you just can’t step beyond your front door without.
Keys, obviously. A phone for entertainment, payments and general comms. A brolly, because you never really know what the weather’s up to. And increasingly, for me at least, INIU’s portable power bank.
Carrying around a portable charger is non-negotiable in such tech-dependent times. No matter how new the phone, it will likely run out of juice before its nightly charge - especially if I’m really hammering use, as I tend to on holiday. The battery case for my earbuds does so well, I forget to charge it until it’s too late: cue blistering silence when I need it the most (usually in the No Man’s Land of public transport). I also need a battery pack to top up my rechargeable vape - the thought of it running dry makes me picture Edvard Munch's 19th-century masterpiece, The Scream.
Battery packs, the good ones at least, aren’t famed for their aesthetic flair. They’re big, bulky and rather heavy, adding to the weight of all the stuff we’ve come to accept we must lug around every day. It’s one of the reasons I love INIU’s Pocket Rocket P50 so much.

The 10,000mAh design, with curved edges that make it feel like a polished pebble, fits comfortably into the palm of my hand and weighs just 160g. Its size is about 45 per cent smaller and 35 per cent lighter than comparable battery packs with the same capacity, thanks to something called TinyCell Pro battery. The short of it is that it shrinks the size without sacrificing power, making it perfect for portable battery packs.
Small means cute, plus it comes in a selection of fun pastel colours (don’t worry, there’s black for the purists too), so you can spot it easily inside a busy bag or on the table.
The short lanyard attached to it doubles up as a fast-charging USB-C charging cable, so you won’t even need to remember to carry extra wires. You could use it as a functional bag charm, but honestly, it’s too precious to risk losing (although that lanyard does feel pretty secure in very scientific twirling-around tests I performed at home).
A simple display on the front is one of the most useful features. It shows you just how much power is left in the unit, so you’ll know how close you are to running out. When you’re recharging the powerbank, the unit will flash the percentage it’s filled, so you know how long you’ve got to go. Fast recharging can take as little as two hours.
I’ve taken the INIU as a backup while travelling to the Continent and as my only source of extra power when visiting relatives. It’s gone the distance - as long as I’m mindful about general phone use.
Day-to-day, it fits easily into my crossbody bag, and sits happily in my Uniqlo sling bag on longer day trips (although honestly, what can’t that bag hold?). I barely notice its presence until I’m in the low-power danger zone and it comes riding in to save the day.
