Initial tests taken late Monday night on Bears quarterback Nick Foles produced good news, head coach Matt Nagy said. Foles, who hurt his hip and glute muscle in the final minute Monday night, will avoid injured reserve.
“Everything looked good so far,” Nagy said Tuesday. “It was good news in regards to his hip/glute. It wasn’t as bad as we once thought.”
The glute injury is both a strain and a bruise, Nagy said.
“When I was on the field I thought it was going to be a lot more significant — and you just never know,” Nagy said. “He’s been hit a few times and I think, in any case, whatever the definition ... it’s a lot better than I thought.”
The Bears could consider changing quarterbacks regardless. Nagy said part of the Bears’ self-scouting session will include a look at their quarterbacks. Mitch Trubisky is dealing with his own injury: a right shoulder problem that has kept him from practicing the last two weeks.
“When you lose four games in a row, it’s all on the table,” Nagy said. “Everything’s out there. But the No. 1 thing with Nick and with Mitch that we are concerned about now is making sure their health is the No. 1 priority and that’ll be significant here moving forward.”
Foles was carted off the field after being knocked down by defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo, a Northwestern alum, as he threw an incomplete pass. Foles laid on the ground for several minutes, surrounded by coaches and teammates, before the cart came for him.
The injury opens the door for Trubisky to return — provided he’s healthy. Trubisky hurt his right shoulder 16 days ago while running a “Wildcat” play against the Saints. He saw a specialist in Los Angeles, but it was determined he did not need surgery. He hasn’t practiced since, but the Bears presumed the Packers game could be a return target for Trubisky; otherwise they would have put him on injured reserve.
WIth Foles hurt, third-stringer Tyler Bray played the last, unsuccessful, possession.
Nagy address two other major injuries for the Bears. Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks has a strained right hamstring, he said, while the team is waiting for confirmation that tight end Dwayne Harris has a torn triceps. Harris’ injury would be season-ending.
