Infrastructure work at Leeds prison nominated for social impact award

Infrastructure work at Leeds prison is among twelve projects in the district that are nominated for an award for transforming the everyday lives of residents.

The construction work at the jailhouse in Armley has made the regional shortlist for an award for the best construction that has made a social impact.

The work at the prison is one of 35 schemes in Yorkshire that have been nominated for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) award.

Last year the government invested £10 million in a wave of measures designed to tackle drug abuse and violence in 10 UK prisons, including in Leeds prison and Wealstun prison.

It provided governors with new scanners that can detect packages inside bodies and sniffer dogs, as well as money to spend on improving perimeter defences, repairing basic infrastructure and improving living conditions.

The awards are divided into nine categories - commercial, education, healthcare, heritage, infrastructure, land and rural, leisure, residential and student accommodation sectors - with an overall winner also due to be announced.

Educational projects in the Leeds district that are nominated in the social impact category include the Forging Futures campus at Kirkstall Forge and the expansion of Cottingley Primary Academy in Cottingley.

Residential developments nominated for the award in the district include the Climate Innovation District in the city centre, the Garnets in Hunslet Moor, Regent Lodge in Chapel Allerton and Broadlea Street in Bramley.

The awards are judged by industry professionals regionally and nationally.

Matthew Howell, the managing director of RICS UK, said: "This year’s shortlist features some of the best talent in our profession, and the new Social Impact Awards recognises the significant value these projects have brought to the communities around them. The judges will have their work cut out deciding on who gets the top award with so many top projects involved."

The RICS Yorkshire and the Humber ceremony takes place on June 5.

A national grand final will be held later in September for those successfully nominated from each region - with property expert David Brooks Wilson leading a panel of guest judges to select those projects worthy of the top award.
