Infra expansion at Delhi govt schools gets a boost

NEW DELHI: Around 3.7 lakh students switched from private institutions to Delhi government schools, and according to deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday, their parents felt assured by the facilities in these schools.

During the inauguration of 12,430 new classrooms in 240 schools, at an event in Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Rajokri, that was livecast across the schools, Sisodia said, “Delhi government schools are now better than private schools. So far, 3.7 lakh children have left big private schools to join Delhi Government schools. Their parents are also proud that their children's future is being nurtured in such wonderful ways in these schools.”

Sisodia said the teachers had to accept the big responsibility of seeing that none of the students left school merely hoping to bag a good job, but that they do so as good citizens.

The deputy CM claimed that Delhi government was the only state administration in India to spend a fourth of its budget on education. “Our schools boast better infrastructure than private schools now,” he said. “We have built marvelous facilities but it is now the duty of every student and teacher to convert the infrastructure into flourishing schools.”

CM Arvind Kejriwal, who inaugurated the classrooms, said the facilities in government schools weren’t available even in the best private schools. “I am elated to share that the process of creating 11,000 classrooms which started three years ago has resulted in 12,430 new classrooms being inaugurated today,” said Kejriwal. “The completion of this goal within a mere three years is in itself a major wonder for the way things function in our country.”

The new buildings are inclusive of functional laboratories, multipurpose halls and digital classrooms and are supported by state-of-the-art technology for teaching. There are also provisions for lifts and ramps in these buildings for the differently abled students.
