Inflation in Iraq Raises in May

The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced on Monday that the rate of inflation in May rose by 0.9 percent compared to April.

Ministry Spokesman Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi said in a statement that "the rate of inflation during the month of May rose by 0.9 percent compared with the month of April.”

He attributed that to "the rise in the housing section by 0.1 percent and the Department of Health by 0.3 percent and transportation by 7.4 percent.”

“Annual inflation also increased by one percent, compared to May 2017, while the core inflation index rose by one percent from April, and the annual basis rose by 0.9 percent," Hindawi explained.

"The price collection process conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics during the month of May did not include Nineveh Province and did not calculate the standard figures during the month because of the prevailing conditions," he stated.

“The Department of Food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased by one percent while the clothing and shoes increased by 1.3 percent, the housing decreased by 1.2 percent and the Transport Department recorded the highest percentage increase of 7.4 percent,” Hindawi explained in his statement.
