Infants’ remains discovered at site of former mother and baby home

  • The remains of 22 additional babies have been discovered at the site of the former St Mary’s mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway.
  • This brings the total number of infant remains found at the site to 99 since the excavation began in July 2025.
  • The most recent discoveries were made between 1 June and 15 July in an area previously used for vehicle access, with no surface indications of burials.
  • The ongoing excavation by the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention Tuam (ODAIT) aims to identify infants who died at the home between 1925 and 1961.
  • Officials noted the challenging nature of the search, including the close proximity of remains and the site's location within a populated housing estate.
