Infant tests positive for coronavirus in NT quarantine after returning from India

The child's mother and young sibling also tested positive for coronavirus upon return to Australia.

A young child has tested positive for coronavirus in the Howard Springs quarantine facility in the Northern Territory more than a week after returning to Australia on a repatriation flight from India.

The child is the sixth confirmed case of coronavirus from India repatriation flight QF112, which landed in Darwin on October 27.

Last week, health authorities announced five returned travellers from the flight had tested positive for coronavirus — cases which included the child's mother and young sibling.

The child, who NT Government authorities confirmed was under one-year-old, tested negative for the virus upon arrival at Howard Springs last week.

The office of the Chief Minister said the family was "well and asymptomatic".

QF112 was the second of eight Commonwealth repatriation flights chartered to bring 1,300 Australians home from South Africa, Europe and India.

Last week, the NT Government said it expected 5-10 per cent of all passengers returning on repatriation flights would test positive for coronavirus.

The new case brings the total number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the Northern Territory to 40.

The NT Government said all cases were related to international or interstate travel.

There have been no recorded cases of community transmission in the Northern Territory.
