Infamous gangland killer John Dundon a step closer to freedom with prison move

Notorious gangland killer John Dundon is a step closer to freedom after being moved to Cork Prison, where he has access to more courses.

We have learned that prison bosses made the decision to move Dundon, 38, from Portlaoise Prison to Cork Prison in recent days.

Sources say this is because Dundon, who is serving life for the murder of Shane Geoghegan in 2008, needs more access to courses and other programmes to further advance his sentence.

It is understood the mobster was in a largely restricted area of Portlaoise, where he didn’t have access to the various programmes needed to be eligible for potential release in the years to come.

Sources say he will now enjoy life in the general prison population in Cork, whereas before he was on a restricted landing.

But they stressed that while this is a step to progress his sentence, Dundon will not be released from prison any time soon.

“While this does not mean Dundon is getting out tomorrow, this is an opportunity for him to prove himself now and take on the programmes needed to better himself behind bars,” a source said.

Innocent rugby player Mr Geoghegan, 28, died after he was shot five times as he walked to his girlfriend's house in the early hours of 9 November, 2008, in a horrific case of mistaken identity.

Infamous Dundon was a member of the Dundon/McCarthy mob who were in a bitter gangland dispute with the Keane/Collopy gang in Limerick.

It is believed 20 murders happened after Eddie Ryan was shot dead at the Moose Bar in Limerick in 2010.

Dundon’s infamous brothers Dessie and Wayne Dundon are also serving life sentences for murder, while their brother Gerard served time for violent disorder.
