IndyCar drivers involved in huge wreck before the race even started

Saturday’s IndyCar race at Gateway, the first of a weekend double-header at the track, got off to an awful start that saw several cars knocked out of the race before they could even take the green flag.

As polesitter Will Power slowly led a very bunched-up field to the green, rookie Alex Palou darted out of line and to the inside, and was quickly followed by Simon Pagenaud and Oliver Askew. Pagenaud checked up, Askew ran into the back of Pagenaud, and Pagenaud clipped Alexander Rossi as he spun. It was a mess.

Rossi joked that the wreck was reminiscent of an incident in the IndyCar iRacing series that occurred during the lockdown, where most of the field was wiped out while coming to the green.
