Indy 500 runner-up Ericsson disqualified after failing technical inspections

Indy 500 runner-up Marcus Ericsson is one of three drivers to have been disqualified from this year's race after failing technical inspections.

IndyCar announced on Monday that the Andretti-run cars of Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood, who finished sixth, along with Callum Ilott's #90 Prema entry that had crossed the line in 13th were all found to have irregularities.

The Andretti cars were discovered to have modified the "Dallara-supplied Energy Management System covers and cover-to-A-arm mounting points with unapproved spacers and parts".

As IndyCar outlined in its latest release, "these modifications provided the capability of enhanced aerodynamic efficiency to both cars".

Meanwhile, on Prema Racing's #90 entry, the front wing did not meet the minimum endplate height and location specifications.

The series specifically highlights that the team failed to meet the left endplate height, and a rule that states that the endplates, wing flaps and mainplanes remain in the designed locations.

In addition to being disqualified, each crew was also fined $100,000 and their teams and competition managers were handed a one-race suspension to be served at this weekend's upcoming race in Detroit.

Ericsson's penalty means that David Malukas' AJ Foyt entry is promoted to second, while McLaren's Pato O'Ward is now classified third.
