Indore zoo to get six new inmates

INDORE: Indore’s Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya is slated to get a pair of zebra, and two pairs of flightless birds rhea from Maharashtra and Kerala.

Zoo authorities said that they have already sent proposals to acquire new inmates to the respective zoos in exchange for species which are in surplus at Indore zoo.

“We are expecting to get a pair of zebras from Mumbai’s Byculla zoo. They are bringing as many as ten pairs of zebras from Israel, and one of them would be brought here as part of an animal exchange programme,” said Indore zoo in-charge Uttam Yadav.

He added that they would be giving a pair of lions and wolves from Indore in exchange for the zebras. In addition to the zebras, zoo authorities also sought two pairs of rheas from Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, and are expecting for their demand.

“We have offered them a lion in exchange for two rheas, but a final decision on species we would be exchanging for the flightless birds would be taken according to their demand,” said Yadav.
