Indore to say goodbye to MP-09 registration numbers for 2-wheelers

INDORE: People buying twowheelers in the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh would no longer be getting registration numbers for their vehicle in ‘MP-09’ code. The alphabetic series of vehicle registration numbers with ‘MP-09’ code in the twowheeler category is about to exhaust. And this has prompted regional transport officials to look for an alternative.

As per information, the ‘MP-09’ code, which denotes the state’s name and Indore district’s sequential number, was introduced back in the year 1989, on the basis of which registration numbers were allotted to vehicles by Indore’s regional transport office.

Later, the department introduced alphabetic series to give unique numbers for vehicles of different categories for four-wheelers, motorcycles, scooters, trucks, taxis, passenger vehicles etc. separately.

Transport department officials said that a plan to introduce alternative code or alphabetic series patterns is under consideration. “A special triple alphabet series or a new code similar to ‘MP-09’ such as ‘MP-99’ or ‘MP-90’ can work as an alternative to this situation,” they said, adding that a final decision on the same would however be taken by the department’s headquarters only.

Daily number of vehicles registered at Indore’s regional transport office (RTO) is more than 600. This includes around 300 two-wheelers, while remaining are fourwheeler, commercial, agriculture, passenger vehicles etc. Registration numbers in any alphabetic series under the two-wheeler category are sold out within a month, they pointed out.

Archana Mishra, an assistant regional transport officer with Indore RTO, said that they are selling registration numbers under the last alphabetic series of ‘XF’ for two-wheelers.

“We will look for alternate code or series for registration numbers after the current series is exhausted. The matter will be taken up for discussion with the department headquarters, and a decision will be taken accordingly,” she said.
