Indore: MY Hospital faces shortage of black fungus injections

INDORE: The MY Hospital is likely to face shortage of anti-fungal injections which is used to treat mucormycosis patients.

Till Sunday late night, MYH had only 46 vials of amphotericin injection left with it for 39 patients admitted there, as per records of the hospital.

The anti-fungal drug is administered to patients on basis of their weight. On an average basis, a patient requires four to six vials at one go for a period up to 45 days in treatment of black fungus.

MGMMC head of medicine department Dr VP Pandey said, “There are some patients of mucormycosis with neuromuscular involvement requiring anti-fungal injection. In case of other types of involvement, the injection is not required.”

“Even when number of patients has decreased, there are ups and downs in the stock of anti-fungal injection. But we request state government keeping in mind our requirement, which it provides on urgent basis”, he added.

He further said, “Mucormycosis patients, admitted at the hospital, have recurrence of disease in them due to inadequate treatment and procedure or got admitted to MYH after exhausting their resources by treatment in private hospitals due to the cost involved in it.”

Doctors treating mucormycosis patients should be very practical in prescribing injection or oral drugs based on detailed investigation. There is no need of injection for patients if dead tissues of mucormycosis is removed completely, said Dr Pandey.

“The doctors’ team at MY Hospital did this on a case-to-case basis with focus on better removal of fungus from infected facial areas of patients to reduce requirement of medicine during peak time leading to reduction in fatalities”, claimed Dr Pandey.

The hospital treated 786 patients of mucormycosis since April this year during the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic with only 7.8% fatality rate.
