At least 222 people have died and hundreds have been injured after a tsunami believed to be caused by a volcanic eruption struck Indonesia.

Huge waves, reported to have reached 10ft high, hit coastal areas in the north and south-east of the Sunda Strait, which runs between the islands of Java and Sumatra, at 9.30pm on Saturday (2.30pm UK time).

Hundreds of homes and other buildings including hotels were "heavily damaged" while thousands residents have been forced to evacuate to higher ground.

It is feared the number of victims may rise because rescue teams have not yet reached all the affected areas.
