Indonesia riots: Six dead as protesters clash with troops over election results

At least six people have been killed and 200 injured in riots in Jakarta as protests over Indonesia's newly announced election result spilled into violence.

Supporters of unsuccessful candidate Prabowo Subianto, a former general, clashed with security forces on Tuesday night, burning vehicles and throwing rocks at police.

A paramilitary police dormitory was set ablaze as police battled protestors with tear gas, rubber bullets and a water cannon.

The unrest broke out after the country's election commission confirmed that incumbent President Joko Widodo won last month's election.

The General Election Commission (KPU) on Tuesday confirmed that Widodo won 55.5 per cent of votes against Prabowo's 44.5 per cent.

Prabowo has alleged that the vote was rigged, but election officials dismissed claims of systematic cheating.

Demonstrations on Tuesday by Subianto supporters started peacefully but turned violent, and by the evening police began trying to disperse the crowds with tear gas.

"As per 9 o'clock this morning, there were 200 people hurt being brought to five hospitals," Jakarta's governor Anies Baswedan told broadcaster TVOne. "The number of people dead was six."

Hundreds of protesters were still locked in a tense stand-off with police in central Jakarta on Wednesday after a night of violence.

TV footage showed smoke billowing in the streets of the Tanah Abang district, with some throwing firecrackers and tearing down public fences.

Australia, the United States, and the UK issued travel advisories warning of an increased risk of violence across Indonesia, advising citizens to stay away from protests.
