Indonesia earthquake: Tsunami warning after huge 7.4 magnitude tremor

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 has struck 134 kilometres northwest of Temate, Moluccas, Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was measured at 62 km deep.

A tsunami alert has officially been issued in the region.

In July, the area was hit with a 7.2 quake with the epicentre recorded in in the city of Ternate on Halmahera, the largest island in North Maluku - on the eastern side of the country.

It is thought the earthquake struck 10km below the surface, which is relatively shallow.

The closer a quake is to the surface the higher the more its impact will be felt.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casaulties.

On Monday, southeastern France as been struck by an unusual 5.4 magnitude earthquake- the strongest tremor to hit the mainland in nearly two decades.

Four people were injured by the tremor, which was reportedly felt from Lyon to Montpellier when it struck just before noon, local time.

The quake struck the Ardèche region and did not cause any major damage, the French Central Seismological Office (BCSF) in Strasbourg said in a statement, according to Euronews .

The tremor was felt mainly in the Drôme and Ardèche regions and pictures show quake damage to some buildings in the eastern city of Le Teil.

Early reports suggest it is the strongest quake to hit mainland France since 2003, according to French media.
