Indonesia earthquake: Huge 7.3 tremor strikes near tourist hotspot Maluku Islands

A huge earthquake has hit close to the surface in Indonesia.

The 7.2 magnitude quake struck the Asian island nation at around 9.30am this morning.

The epicentre was recorded in in the city of Ternate on Halmahera, the largest island in North Maluku - on the eastern side of the country.

It is thought the earthquake struck 10km below the surface, which is relatively shallow.

The closer a quake is to the surface the higher the more its impact will be felt.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casaulties.

Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning at 9.41am before later suggesting a powerful water mass wasn't likely to hit the coast.

Because the epicentre is almost on the coast of the island the chance of a tsunami hitting the land was fairly high.

People living on Halmahera took to Twitter to report their experiences of the tremors.

"The earthquake in Northeast Labuha made us panic in Ternate, the shock of the release of BMKG 7, 2 on the Richter Scale, made all of the houses on the mainland of Ternate Island shaken," one man wrote.

"May God protect us."

"There are no reports of infrastructure damage yet," Iksan Subur, an official with Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency based in the regency of South Halmahera, told Reuters.

"But people panicked and ran out of their houses. Some people who live near the ocean are starting to move to higher ground."

Around an hour before the tremors were felt an earthquake hit Sumbawa, an island to the south of Indonesia.

The 6.9 magnitude quake was felt in several cities including Mataram, Bima and Waingapu.

It also struck at the relatively shallow depth of 10km.

Seven days ago a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Sulawesi, an island to the east of the country's main land mass.

Today's earthquake comes after Australia was hit by a 6.6 magnitude shake this morning followed by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock.
