Indonesia drops drug charges against Australian businessman Tony Haritos

The case against a prominent Darwin man facing drug charges in Indonesia has been dropped, according to his lawyers.

Businessman Tony Haritos was sailing around West Timor in July when his catamaran broke down near the Sabu Islands, before drifting to Sumba.

He severely injured his back on the broken-down boat before a local fisherman spotted the vessel a few days later and called for help.

Indonesian authorities then rescued Mr Haritos and took him to hospital.

However, while searching his boat later on, local police alleged they found a small amount of methamphetamines.

Treated in Sumba and Bali

Mr Haritos was originally evacuated to the nearby island of Sumba after he was rescued.

But in August he was transferred to a hospital in Bali for better treatment.

In a statement, his lawyer Edward Pangkahila said the case was dropped late last month.

However, Mr Haritos only received the letter informing him of the decision on Saturday.

Mr Haritos was released from hospital earlier this month and he became an outpatient after police dropped the case, Mr Pangkahila said.
