JAISALMER: Indira Gandhi Canal will be closed completely from April 25 till May 19.
For these 25 days, water kept in storage will be provided to cities and villages for drinking. PHED claims that water supply will not be affected due to canal closure because the storage capacity is huge and the supply of drinking water will continue as earlier.
According to the official sources, relining work is being done on the 67-km-long canal project due to which the 60-day proposed canal closure started from March 21.
There was partial closure from March 21 to April 23, during which 2,000 cusecs water was given in the canal till April 23 for drinking purpose.
Irrigation department chief engineer Amarjeet Singh Meharda said that during the canal closure of 60 days, the Punjab government will do the relining works on the 53km stretch and will spend Rs 450 crore.
He said the Rajasthan government will do the relining work on 67km area and will spend Rs 250 crore.
