Indigenous march in Brasilia calls for land rights and climate action

The demonstrators marched toward Three Powers Square in the heart of Brazil’s capital, where the Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace are located.

Clashes broke out near Congress after some protesters tried to cross a security barrier. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Indigenous lands make up 13% of Brazil’s territory, mostly within the Amazon, a vital carbon sink facing severe droughts and wildfires linked to climate change.

Undeterred by past setbacks, Indigenous leaders are renewing calls for meaningful participation in global climate policy, stressing their crucial contribution in protecting forest ecosystems and preserving biodiversity.
