Indians select FIU lefty Logan Allen with second round pick in 2020 amateur draft

If one left-handed Logan Allen wasn't enough, the Indians went ahead and added a second one on Thursday night.

With their second-round pick (No. 56 overall) in the 2020 amateur draft, the Indians selected, yes, left-handed pitcher Logan Allen out of Florida International University. The Indians last year also acquired a left-handed Logan Allen in the three-team trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati.

The Logan Allen drafted Thursday night was the No. 46-ranked draft prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Allen, 21, was drafted in the 16th round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 but opted to go to college. He has a three-pitch repertoire, offering a low 90s fastball with plus command, a plus changeup with sink and a curveball. Allen is viewed, at this point, more as a pitcher with command who can set up hitters than a pure stuff, higher-ceiling prospect.

The original Logan Allen in the Indians' system, the one acquired from San Diego in the three-team deal, on Thursday night Tweeted, "New guy is gonna need a new name ... or start dealing right handed. Your move Logan Allen."

With their third-round selection, the No. 95 pick in the draft, the Indians added outfielder Petey Halpin out of Saint Francis High School in California.

Halpin's stock quickly rose last year, eventually nabbing him a spot in the MLB High School All-Star Game at Progressive Field. An 18-year-old Texas commit, Halpin was somewhat overshadowed by other California prep outfielders but continued to progress enough to put his name into consideration even in a shortened draft.

Halpin, who hits left-handed and throws right-handed, has speed and a plus arm in the outfield and is viewed as a hitter who can make hard contact consistently. Halpin was ranked as the No. 76-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline.

On Wednesday night, the Indians selected high school shortstop Carson Tucker (No. 23 overall) and Auburn right-handed pitcher Tanner Burns (No. 36 overall).
