Indiana Honors Bob Knight With Moment of Silence Before Exhibition Game

Indiana held a moment of silence at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall ahead of the Hoosiers women’s basketball team’s exhibition matchup against Northwood, in honor of Bob Knight, who died Wednesday at the age of 83.

Knight, who was the head coach of the Hoosiers’ men’s basketball program for 29 seasons, was honored in a touching moment prior to the national anthem before the game.

A graphic of the legendary head coach was displayed on the scoreboard at the arena, and the PA announcer spoke on Knight’s legacy before he was celebrated in the moment of silence.

“Earlier this evening, one of the game’s true giants, Bob Knight, passed away. The iconic coach, arguably the greatest in the history of the sport, won three NCAA championships and 11 Big Ten titles, and authored countless Hoosier memories. Please honor this IU legend with a moment of silence,” said the PA announcer.

Indiana wasn’t the only program to pay its respects to Knight.

Purdue also held a moment of silence for Knight at Mackey Arena before its exhibition game against Grace College on Wednesday evening.

It was against the Boilermakers in 1985 in which Knight infamously threw a chair across the court after receiving a technical foul during a game in Bloomington. A longtime rival of Indiana during Knight’s tenure, the program honored the late head coach on Wednesday.

In addition to his three decades at Indiana, Knight coached six seasons at Army and seven at Texas Tech. With the Hoosiers, Knight won the national championship in 1976, '81 and '87.
