A 73-year-old Indian woman has given birth to twin girls after seeking IVF treatment with her husband, aged 82.
Mangayamma Yaramati said she and husband Sitarama Rajarao had always wanted children but were unable to conceive until now.
Dr Uma Sankar, the woman's doctor, told the BBC: "The mother and the babies are doing well."
Her husband said they were "incredibly happy" on Tuesday but just a day later Mr Rajarao suffered a stroke and is currently being treated in hospital.
When asked who would take care of the children if anything were to happen to the elderly couple, Mr Rajarao said: "Nothing is in our hands. Whatever should happen will happen. It is all in the hands of God."
The couple married in 1962 but were unable to conceive despite consulting several doctors and temples.
They said it was important to have children as they felt they were stigmatised by their village.
Mrs Yaramati told The Times of India: "People looked at me with accusing eyes as if I had committed a sin.
"Neighbours would call me 'godralu' (a curse-word for a childless woman. However my husband stood by me like a rock.
"We are the happiest couple on Earth today. We have our own children."
A Caesarean section delivered the twins, which is the usual method in such rare cases.
The case has sparked debate as to whether it was wise to let a woman Mrs Yaramati's age undergo IVF.
