Indian Summer to return for weeks - but we have to get through the rain first

Experts say the Indian Summer of a warm, sunny September could well continue for the rest of the month - after we get a day of rain out of the way first.

The Met Office are forecasting a long, dry and warm spell from Tuesday will last for the rest of the week, and even into the second half of September, temperatures will still be higher than normal.

Forecasters are pretty certain that it’s going to be a nice week ahead - after a day of heavy rain on Monday - and both the forecast for this week, the medium-range forecast for the next couple of weeks and the long-range forecast as September turns into October contain the words ‘warmer than average’.

And a Met Office spokesperson spoke out this week and was quoted in tabloid media as saying: "After a very warm few days, the outlook changes and we will see more mild conditions as things again become a little unsettled.

"We expect that theme to continue, but towards the end of the month there is a signal that the warmer weather will return,” he added.

Senior meteorologist at The Met Office, Greg Dewhurst, said: "We often get a warmer spell particularly early on in September. August was particularly cool... and cloudy, so this spell is the warmest spell of weather since July for the UK."

After the short sharp heatwave at the start of September, the month will settle down into one of Keats’ famous ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’, with calm, warm and sunny days ahead.

In the very short term, Bristol will have rain tonight from around 8pm, which will be heavy through the night in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Monday rush hour and school run will be a wet one, with an 80 per cent chance of heavy rain as a weather front trundles across the region. The rain will continue for most of Monday, only petering out at around 5pm.

But from then onwards, the forecasters are saying Bristol will be pretty much dry for the rest of the week.

There’ll be sunshine spells on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with temperatures up to 20-21 deg C - pleasantly warm for a mid-September day.

The medium-term forecast for the following week and into late September is: “There is a signal for mostly fine and dry weather across southern and eastern areas, with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells, but with the risk of overnight fog patches.

“Overall, temperatures are likely to be near to above average for the time of the year,” it added.
