Indian street food restaurant chain Chaiiwala to open first Manchester site

A new Indian street food restaurant will open in Manchester for the first time after city planners gave their approval.

National chain Chaiiwala has 25 branches across the country - including Rochdale and Bolton - and will set up shop in Cheetham Hill.

The company started in Delhi in 1927, before it began serving Indian-inspired teas, street food and soft drinks in the UK four years ago.

Chaiiwala means someone who prepares, sells and serves chai tea at small roadside stalls in India.

The chain's menu includes an all-day desi breakfast with an omelette, spicy beans or dal, roti and chai, alongside dishes such as chilli paneer, butter chicken roti, pav bhaji and mogo chips.

The Midlands-based firm will create 15 new jobs once it replaces the vacant Martin’s Bakery on Bury Old Road, and has promised to add ‘vibrancy and vitality’ to the area.

Under the change in use plans approved by Manchester council, it will open Sunday to Thursday from 8am to 11pm, and 8am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

The new restaurant, which will not sell alcohol, will be able to seat 45 people.

“Chaiiwala is expected to serve approximately 300 orders of which 150 to 200 will be hot meals prepared on site,” says the planning application.

“The restaurant will add vibrancy and vitality to the street scene by introducing a new restaurant offer at an established food retail premises, thus delivering only a positive impact upon the local centre’s environment.”
